Our 6 Favorite Running Movies

If you're an athlete looking for inspirational stories or just some relaxing time, look no further. Check out the Six Minute Mile staff favorite movies about running here, in no particular order.


1. Race

Jesse Owens is one of the greatest track runners in history. This dramatic account details his struggle against discrimination he faces both in Germany and at home.


2. McFarland, USA

McFarland is a mostly Latino farming town in California. Kevin Costner plays Jim White, a PE teacher and coach, who leads the McFarland underdogs to dominance.


3. Unbroken

While this is only partly about running, its a great movie.  Louie Zamperini was an Olympic athlete who was captured during WWII and overcomes a great struggle.


4. Brittany Runs a Marathon

Hilarious, outgoing and always up for a good time, New Yorker Brittany Forgler is everybody’s best friend ― except maybe her own. At 27, her hard-partying ways, chronic underemployment and toxic relationships are catching up with her, but when she stops by a new doctor’s office to try to score some Adderall, she gets slapped with a prescription she never wanted: Get healthy.


5. Forrest Gump

While this is not exclusively about running, its an inspiring watch. Forrest, played by Tom Hanks, is an unlikely person that lives an extraordinary life. "Run, Forrest, run!"


6. Nike Breaking2 Documentary

Eliud Kipchoge is the world's fastest marathoner. This documentary is quite interesting and informative, detailing his unofficial marathon record: 2:00:25.


7. Without Limits

Steve Prefontaine was America's greatest distance runner, breaking every US track record from 2,000-10,000 meters. His story is inspiring despite its tragic end.


8. Chariots of Fire

This is an acclaimed story of 2 very different athletes that compete in the 1924 Paris Olympics. A faithful Christian and ambitious Jew battle for victory and recognition.


9. The Jericho Mile

10. Marathon Man

Dustin Hoffman plays a graduate student and marathon runner that gets caught up in a government pursuit of a Nazi war criminal and a game of theft, lies, and murder.
